Sense-Ocean-All
The wellbing from all five senses activated when by the ocean
A trip to the ocean is always exciting, whether you live nearby or need to drive for hours to get there.
There is a sense of anticipation for the first glimpse of the sea whilst travelling winding roads. Then comes the reward, the closer, exhilarating view displaying the vast expanse of the big blue. The sheer enormity of the ocean, stretching to the distant horizon, gives that wonderful feeling of space and freedom.
The sea, reflecting the mood of the weather, passes these emotions on to us. On calm days the water is blue, peaceful and inviting, whilst stormy weather turns the sea restless and untamed.
SIGHT: Tranquil ocean blues with far horizon
The ocean is a forever moving body of water, with its tides and currents. Near the beach, the waves create a hypnotic rhythm as they break, running up the sand before retreating to the sea. The pebbles on the beach rattle together as the water moves over them, first one way and then the other.
Where rocks occur, the wave motion is broken prematurely. The sea water crashes intermittently against the rocky barriers, forming pools before trickling back to the sea.
The cries of gulls, some nearby and others more muted in the distance, add to the orchestra of the ocean.
SOUND: Gull cries above the beat of the ocean
SMELL: Tangy ocean air
Relaxing in the space and freedom, listening to the beat of the ocean, one cannot help but take deep breaths of fresh ocean air.
Sea salt, combined with gasses from marine plants and plankton, creates a tangy fragrance which triggers memories and emotions, heightening one’s mood.
TOUCH: Reach into the Ocean
The cold sea water bites sharply into warm skin. Reaching through the ocean, sunlight casts patterns on tingling limbs.
Endorphins and adrenalin are released in reaction to the cold water and a natural “high” begins, washing away any negative thoughts and filling the senses with happiness and energy.
TASTE the Ocean
Fully submerged, the vastness of the ocean is cloaked by limited visibility, making it more intimate. A foreign, mysterious world filled with colour and life is revealed.
Kelp forests and gullies, interspersed with shell-covered sandy areas are waiting to be explored. The sea is home to an enormous variety of marine plants and creatures. Seaweeds sway with the tide, star fish are splayed out, crabs hunt and fish glide past.
The flavour of the ocean is experienced from the lick of salty lips, as well as in a tasty seafood meal.
SENSE-OCEAN-ALL:
Joie de vivre (Joy of Living)
Gaze out with wonder at soothing views,
Of nature’s multi-toned ocean blues.
Hear the rhythm of beating waves,
Rolling on sand, surging through caves.
Inhale deeply, let memories swell,
As you absorb and delight in the tangy smell.
Reach out and touch the liquid cold,
With hand or foot, or body bold!
Lick your lips to taste the sea,
Salty and sharp I guarantee.
Forget your worries, your stresses and strife,
Let the ocean’s magic boost your life.
